Dental Implants
A New Option For Replacing Missing Teeth
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a titanium root that is placed into the jaw bone to support a crown to form an artificial tooth.
The implant is usually inserted into the jaw bone under a local anesthetic, and the bone grows onto the implant and integrates with the surface
Is it biocompatible?
Titanium is the most biocompatible material for the use of dental implants for missing or lost teeth.
It is now used widely in medicine for artificial replacement of joints.
When to use a dental implant
Whether teeth were lost through accident, disease or decay, dental implants are a great tooth replacement option for many patients.
A consult with Dr Jon will determine if it is the right treatment plan for you.
Implants v's crown or bridge
• when the roots of the teeth are missing, the jaw bone degenerates in these areas, with the insertion of dental implants, you can prevent this bone resorption and keep your natural look. Crown and Bridges do not replace the roots and thus are unable to prevent the degeneration that can change the contours of your face and make you look older (!)
• To attach the bridge, the dentist often needs to grind down healthy neighboring teeth, using the dental implants, this is usually not necessary and so healthy teeth are preserved.
• when good oral hygiene is observed, dental implants can last longer then bridges or prostheses and therefore can become a more long term economic solution
What are the advantages of dental implants?
• Implant supported teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth. When the natural roots of teeth are lost, bone resorption in the jaws may occur, this can be avoided by inserting dental implants.
• you can eat whatever you want - your teeth are strong and stable, they look and feel like your own teeth too
• they are an efficient long term solution, both economically and for maintenance of good oral hygiene.
